Shabana Azmi is a leading film and theatre actress in India. In a career span of 35 years she has worked in around 140 Indian and International films. She has received the National Award India’s highest honour for best actress a record 5 times and several International awards including Best Actress for Deepa Mehta’s Fire at Chicago international film festival. Former Member of Parliament in India, she works for the rights of women and slum dwellers. She is the recipient of the Gandhi International Peace Prize 2006, the first Indian to receive this award that Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama received before her. The same year, she received the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum along with Michael Douglas. She is the recipient of the International Human Rights award presented by President Mitterrand in Paris in 1989 along with Mother Teresa.
